The Gun Conversation is Happening Again
The past couple of weeks, the news media, politicians, and social media users have brought the conversation about guns and the 2nd amendment back to the forefront. This is due to multiple mass shootings that have happened in the country recently. It seems like this happens every year, or every couple of years. One or two mass shootings happen in America, for a few weeks politicians argue over gun rights and regulations, and then nothing really happens. However, this time, President Biden is planning to enact measures through the act of an executive order, which does not need approval from members of Congress. The administration has listed proposals for what they will bring to the table. But will this really change anything? I am worried that no matter the gun control law put in place, mass shootings will continue to happen. The recent mass shooters obtained their guns legally. Perhaps the conversation needs to be more in-depth. Why does this really keep happening?
Nicole,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog “he Gun Conversation is Happening Again,” and entirely agree with your observation, “The administration has listed proposals for what they will bring to the table. Without getting into past efforts to control weapons such as automatic weapons, large magazines, anything enabling a shooter from causing mass destruction in a very short period of time, not much can be done to limit people’s right to right to keep and bear arms due to the Second Amendment to the Constitution. So why is neither Congress nor the President, addressing why is this happening? This is my take, violence is constantly glorified by Hollywood, by video games, by the media. As children are growing up, they are surrounded by violence through the video games they play, where killing is easy and rewarded. Once the game is over the player gets to start over again and continue to get rewarded by killing more people. Some individuals are not as mentally stable as others, and have a difficulty separating fantasy from fact. They can kill people with impunity, it’s just a game. The most popular movies perpetuate violence, the media seems to thrive on it and will continue to discuss or show the result of a shooting for days. Why is all of this possibly contributing to these mass shootings, after all, you and I can separate fantasy from reality, but as I said previously, some people cannot.
So, what’s the fix? STOP GLORIFING VIOLANCE! Will the administration take on Hollywood or the video game makers? ABSOLUTLY NOT. They do not want to kill the goose that continually lays the golden egg…donations. You’re right, guns do not kill people the person holding and firing the gun does; cars do not kill people, the drivers of the vehicles do. Is there a fix in sight, will Biden go up against money, I doubt it. It will be business as usual. Sad but true.

You are correct, this topic seems to come back to the forefront every year or two and for good reason I might add. Guns are a very tricky subject in this country as it seems nobody really knows what is the best step to take as there are so many differing opinions about this issue. One thing is for certain and its that these mass shootings have got to stop especially mass shooting that take place in schools.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
Hey Nicole,
ReplyDeleteI spoke with my wife about this very issue actually this week. Shes from another part of the world, and so I was interested to see what she thought about why these things keep happening. It is her view that even though our country is very rich, many of the people here are increasingly desperate. Not enough of that money goes from the top to the people at the bottom. Just thought it might be interesting to share.
Hey Nicole,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog post this week and hearing your viewpoints on the gun control in the U.S. I never was a fan of the gun control laws because they never solved anything in my opinion. Shooting still occurs, people still get their hands on guns before people that even are able to have guns, the massacres are increasing rapidly. Personally the answer is to find an alternative. Guns should not be so easy to access.
